Slumdog Millionaire essay

One conflict I will be describing in the film Slumdog Millionaire by Danny Boyle is between Jamal and Prem Kumar. Conflict is one of the main important aspects in the film. It is seen throughout the film between the main characters, Jamal and Prem. Even from the opening scene, Jamal is being beaten up and tortured by the police because Prem thinks Jamal is cheating and he doesn’t want him to win the 20 million rupees offered in the gameshow, “Who wants to be a Millionaire?” Prem even gives Jamal a wrong answer by writing ‘B’ on a bathroom mirror but Jamal knows he doesn’t like him so choose ‘D’ instead and turns out being the right answer. This example shows that Prem wants Jamal to fail and that conflict is present between the two.

The techniques I will be describing to show the conflict is the cinematography, contrast in dialogue and the music used.

One of the several techniques used in the film is the cinematography. Cinematography is what makes the film special. It helps make a scene more interesting by putting different kind of shots, camera angles or changing the colour tones. One type of shot used through cinematography is a mid shot. The show shows Jamal and Prem staring each other down while Prem is asking him questions before the show starts. It shows the values between the two and obviously Prem is the center of attention because he runs the show. It also tells use the conflict is still going on when the game show is live on air. Another example of cinematography is a close up showing being very nervous and shaky then cuts to Prem with a big grin on his face and being very confident. This shows who’s more dominant when the show is on air which clearly is Prem and he doesn’t see Jamal as a threat. The last example of cinematography that I will be describing is a crane show, looking over everyone in the place where the gameshow is going on. It clearly shows and tells us that it is an arena where a competition is taking place. It also tells use Jamal and Prem are the main characters since they are in the middle, separated from the audience.

The contrast in acting style and dialogue of the two characters show the conflict between Jamal and Prem. Prem is very sarcastic about everything Jamal says. He doesn’t take him seriously about anything. An example of the acting and dialogue style of Prem is when Jamal tells him that his job is to get drinks for people at call centers, he calls him a “phone-basher chai-walla” referring to where he works at and calling him someone who sells drinks on the street, which he is not. This shows he’s very critical and sarcastic. Jamal on the other hand is very shy and not a chatty person. He just answers the questions and tries not to go into too much depth. An example of the acting style of Jamal is his whole time spent at the gameshow set. Prem always asks him questions to keep the audience entertained but Jamal doesn’t play along and replies in short sentence answers. This shows that he is not very talkative and is hard to get along with during the gameshow.

Another technique in the film Slumdog Millionaire is the use of music. Music is used a lot in the film to give a breaking point. It helps create tension and is a fill I to make you keep watching to see what will happen next. An example of the music is the soundtrack. The soundtrack includes the tick-tock sound at the start of the film, the applause when Jamal gets an answer correct, and the background music. These sounds make the movie more dramatic because the tension it creates makes the movie have more action and the conflict more intense than it actually is. The tick-tock sound in particular is probably the main music used in the soundtrack to create tension because it almost makes it feel like time has slowed down and makes the scene the scene more intense.

The conflict between Jamal and Prem helped me understand the main idea of love will overcome all.

The conflict in the film explains how he overcomes his life of poverty. Jamal grew up as a Slumdog in a Indian slum with his brother, Salim. During his time as a Slumdog, he conquered so many obstacles to get where he was now and win the 20 million rupees.  Everything he overcame somehow linked to every question he was asked in the gameshow by showing what he did through flashbacks. An example of how flash backs showed what he did to overcome his life and get the correct answer was when Salim kicked Jamal out of their apartment and separated Jamal from his love, Latika. In the scene it shows Salim sticking a .44 Magnum Revolver to Jamal’s head threatening him to shoot if Jamal doesn’t leave. It then flashes forwards to Jamal at the gameshow and the question he is asked is ‘Who invented the revolver?’ Jamal learn the answer from his past because it was a life and death situation for him and Latika was the most important person in his life. This shows Jamal overcame anything tat came in his way for his love, Latika

The conflict also helped us to understand Jamal’s love for Latika. Slumdog Millionaire is all about love and Jamal explains to use what he had to overcome to be in peace with his love, Latika. Latika is a girl Jamal met when he and Salim were little. Throughout the film, Jamal and Salim fight over who Latika loves more. It is obvious in the flash backs that she was the focus in Jamal’s life and we realise as the film progresses that Jamal didn’t go to the gameshow for money but for him to get in contact with Latika, after Salim kidnapped her. An example of how we know he didn’t do the gameshow for the money but for Latika is when he sacrifices a lifeline, ‘phone a friend’ to just contact her to see if she was alright and healthy. “It’s not all about the money” is what Jamal says to Latika and Prem. This shows he will do anything for Latika and how much she matters to him.

Three main techniques used in Slumdog Millionaire are cinematography, dialogue style and use of music and the main idea of the film is love will overcome all. Overall, the film was very entertaining and enjoyable to watch and used many techniques to make it more interesting.
